Sardar  Jaswant Singh s/o Surtar Singh
President & Founder of Gurdwara Sahib Sunway

It was year 1991 Bhai Jaswant Singh was called upon by Bhai Damoder Singh who was the priest (Granthi
Sahib) of Gurdwara Sahib Serdang Lama. On my first visit, Giani'ji talked about Sikh religion and all the
sacrifices made by our Guru Sahib's. I was 25 years old at that time and with very little knowledge about
the Sikh religion. After about a month while giani'ji was talking about all the sacrifices, wars guru ji fought
for the sake of mankind my desire to do service for guru and sangat started in me. I have never seen or
come across  Giani'ji who will stay awake until 3am only to  talk about Sikh religion. Now that is a real Giani
Sahib, Bhai Sahib even cooked food for both of us. This was a total new experience for me, all I wanted
was to do seva. The Gurdwara Sahib was in a bad condition and I started cleaning, repairing and painting.
Later Sardar Baldev Singh and Sardar Manjit Singh joined me,  we even started class on youth programs,
punjabi language, kirtan and weekly satsang on  every Wednesday.

For about two years everything went well, the sangat starts coming  and the children got exited with all the
programs. It is a true fact that when you are doing any type of sewa there is always someone watching you
with bad intension's. Without knowing the unexpected I was approached by the
Committee of the Gurdwara
Sahib and he said that I have to stop doing all the sewa. I just can't believe it's happening and without
knowing what to do next I left the Gurdwara Sahib and never returned. My guess is that the president felt
threatened that I might gain popularity among the sangat which I have no intension to do so. Let's be
frank, do you believe a 27 year old would want to go for president's post definitely not me. This is what our
Gurdwara committee's are good at. They are the leader's, they are the seniors, they are the elders we
respect and they are the one should be guiding the younger generation into the Sikh religion. What I
would suggest is when a committee of seniors are elected there should also be a sub-committee of
naujawan-wing who should be given the responsibility to manage the events, function and the
maintenance of the Gurdwara Sahib.  This is the only way to keep the spirit of doing sewa in the younger
generation alive or  else maybe someone has a better solution.

I came accross a  piece of  empty land in Sunway and decided to build a Gurdwara Sahib. There were a
Sikh family staying near the land and after getting their consent, we started and thus it gave birth to
Gurdwara Sahib Sunway. At that moment I did not thought of anything but to just collect donation  and
start building. The first donator of  RM100 was my employer Mr Klaus Staine and we went around
collecting about RM13,000. Our start is totally different we don't have millions and at times we can't even
pay our Giani'ji, our bills with all the building work going on but thanks to all the Sikhs and Non-Sikhs who
has been and still contributing to the gurdwara. We did approach a few well to do Gurdwaras but as usual
our request was rejected.
